RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Rice vinegar is a worldwide popular cereal vinegar worldwide and is typically produced in an open environment, and the ecosystem of solid-state fermentation is complicated and robust. The present study aimed to reveal the shaping force of the establishment of the ecosystem of Beijing rice vinegar, the core function microbiota and their correlation with critical environmental factors. RESULTS: The experimental findings revealed the changes in environmental factors, major metabolites and microbial patterns during Beijing rice vinegar fermentation were obtained. The major metabolites accumulated at the middle and late acetic acid fermentation (AAF) periods. Principal coordinates and t-test analyses revealed the specific bacterial and fungal species at corresponding stages. Kosakonia, Methlobacterium, Sphingomonas, unidentified Rhizobiaceae, Pseudozyma and Saccharomycopsis dorminated during saccharification and alcohol fermentation and early AAF, whereas Lactococcus, Acetobacter, Rhodotorula and Kazachstania dominated the later AAF stages. Canonical correspondence analysis of environmental factors with core microbiota. Temperature and total acid were the most significant factors correlated with the SAF bacterial profile (Pediococcus, Weissella, Enterococcus and Kosakonia). Ethanol was the most significant factor between AAF1 and AAF3, and mainly affected Acetobacter and Lactobacillus. Conversely, ethanol was the most significant factor in the SAF, AAF1 and AAF3 fungi communities; typical microorganisms were Saccharomyces and Malassezia. Furthermore, the predicted phenotypes of bacteria and their response to environmental factors were evaluated. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the present study has provided insights into the process regulation of spontaneous fermentation and distinguished the key driving forces in the microbiota of Beijing rice vinegar fermentation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) suffer from severe myocardial injury during daunorubicin (DNR)-based chemotherapy and are at high risk of cardiac mortality. The crosstalk between tumour cells and cardiomyocytes might play an important role in chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity, but this has yet to be demonstrated. This study aimed to identify its underlying mechanism and explore potential therapeutic targets. METHODS: Cardiac tissues were harvested from an AML patient after DNR-based chemotherapy and were subjected to single-nucleus RNA sequencing. Cardiac metabolism and function were evaluated in AML mice after DNR treatment by using positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and stable-isotope tracing metabolomics. Plasma cytokines were screened in AML mice after DNR treatment. Genetically modified mice and cell lines were used to validate the central role of the identified cytokine and explore its downstream effectors. RESULTS: In the AML patient, disruption of cardiac metabolic homeostasis was associated with heart dysfunction after DNR-based chemotherapy. In AML mice, cardiac fatty acid utilization was attenuated, resulting in cardiac dysfunction after DNR treatment, but these phenotypes were not observed in similarly treated tumour-free mice. Furthermore, tumour cell-derived interleukin (IL)-1α was identified as a primary factor leading to DNR-induced cardiac dysfunction and administration of an anti-IL-1α neutralizing antibody could improve cardiac functions in AML mice after DNR treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that crosstalk between tumour cells and cardiomyocytes during chemotherapy could disturb cardiac energy metabolism and impair heart function. IL-1α neutralizing antibody treatment is a promising strategy for alleviating chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity in AML patients.

RESUMEN

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) play a crucial role in developing lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with high safety and energy density. Exploring SSEs with excellent comprehensive performance is the key to achieving the practical application of LMBs. In this work, the great potential of Li0.95 Na0.05 FePO4 (LNFP) as an ideal SSE due to its enhanced ionic conductivity and reliable stability in contact with lithium metal anode is demonstrated. Moreover, LNFP-based composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) are prepared to further improve electronic insulation and interface stability. The CSE containing 50 wt% of LNFP (LNFP50) shows high ionic conductivity (3.58 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C) and good compatibility with Li metal anode and cathodes. Surprisingly, the LMB of Li|LNFP50|LiFePO4 cell at 0.5 C current density shows good cycling stability (151.5 mAh g-1 for 500 cycles, 96.5% capacity retention, and 99.3% Coulombic efficiency), and high-energy LMB of Li|LNFP50|Li[Ni0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 ]O2 cell maintains 80% capacity retention after 170 cycles, which are better than that with traditional liquid electrolytes (LEs). This investigation offers a new approach to commercializing SSEs with excellent comprehensive performance for high-performance LMBs.

RESUMEN

Side reactions and dendrite growth on the zinc metal anode surface seriously damage the shelf life and calendar life of Zn-based batteries. Here, an Al-complexed artificial interfacial layer is constructed on the Zn surface (denoted as Al-complex@Zn) by a low-cost, facile, and scalable chemical method. The Al-complex interfacial layer improves the wettability of the electrolyte. Meanwhile, the Al-complex layer not only inhibits the side reaction by a physical barrier on the Zn surface but also regulates the zinc-ion flux to realize the uniform deposition of Zn2+. The Zn//Zn symmetric cell with an Al-complex layer has realized an ultralong cycle life of 2400 h and an extremely low polarization voltage of 20 mV (1 mA cm-2, 0.5 mAh cm-2), surpassing those reported in most literature. Furthermore, when an Al-complex@Zn//NaV3O8·1.5H2O (NVO) full cell is assembled, a high capacity retention of 92.5% is achieved over 1000 cycles at a current density of 4 A g-1. This work provides a facile and low-cost strategy on the modification of zinc anode to realize long-cycled aqueous Zn-ion batteries.

RESUMEN

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) caused by rotavirus (RV) remains a public health issue in China. To accelerate the mass rotavirus vaccination, it is important to inform the policy maker, and the public of the economic burden caused by rotavirus infection. A meta-analysis was conducted applying standardized algorithms. Articles published before January 1, 2023, in English and Chinese were searched through PubMed, CNKI, and WanFang Data. Studies with cost analysis of RV AGE were included. A random-effects model was applied to synthesize the total cost of RV AGE from the societal perspective. A prospective survey aimed to measure the cost of RV AGE was conducted in 2021 and 2022 in Shaoxing city, Zhejiang province, that can represent the developed region. The cost data was applied as deviation indicator, in comparison with the pooled estimate generated from meta-analysis. Totally 286 articles were identified, and eventually 12 studies were included. The pooled total social cost of RV AGE was US$282.1 (95%CI: US$213.4-350.7). The pooled private cost of RV AGE was US$206.4 (95%CI: US$155.2-257.5). RV AGE hospitalized and RV AGE incurred in developed regions caused remarkable higher burden (US$631.2 [95%CI: US$512.6-749.8], and US$333.6 [95%CI: US$234.1-433.2] respectively), compared to RV AGE treated at outpatient, and incurred in less developed regions. Our study demonstrates that RV AGE causes a significant economic burden in China. Given the promising effectiveness and highly cost-effective, introduction of rotavirus vaccines in national immunization programs could substantially reduce the economic burden in China.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC) syndrome is a RASopathy subtype that presents with unique craniofacial dysmorphology, congenital heart disease, dermatologic abnormalities, growth retardation, and intellectual disability. This study describes the phenotypic spectrum of CFC in China and its association with CFC syndrome gene variants. RESULTS: Twenty Chinese CFC patients, aged 0.6-9.5 years old, were included in this study and their clinical phenotypic spectrum was compared with that of 186 patients with CFC from non-Chinese ethnicities. All 20 Chinese patients with CFC carried de novo heterozygous BRAF, MAP2K1, and MAP2K2 variants. Two novel variants were detected and consistently predicted to be deleterious using bioinformatic tools. The clinical features of CFC in the Chinese patients included hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (2/20, 10%), pulmonary valve stenosis (2/20, 10%), curly or sparse hair (7/20, 35%), epilepsy (1/20, 5%), and hypotonia (10/20, 50%); these features were less frequently observed in Chinese patients than non-Chinese patients (p < 0.05). In contrast, feeding difficulties (19/20, 95%) were more frequently observed in the Chinese patients. Absent eyebrows and severe short stature were more common in patients with BRAF variants than in those with MAP2K1/2 variants. Facial recognition software was used to recognize most CFC patients using artificial intelligence. CONCLUSION: This study identified novel and common variants in our cohort of 20 Chinese patients with CFC. We uncovered differences in clinical features between Chinese and non-Chinese patients and detected genotype-phenotype correlations among the BRAF and MAP2K1/2 variant subgroups. This is the largest cohort of Chinese CFC patients to our knowledge, providing new insights into a subtype of RASopathy.

RESUMEN

Background: Bone cancer pain (BCP) is one of the most ubiquitous and refractory symptoms of cancer patients that needs to be urgently addressed. Substantial studies have revealed the pivotal role of Cav3.2 T-type calcium channels in chronic pain, however, its involvement in BCP and the specific molecular mechanism have not been fully elucidated. Methods: The expression levels of Cav3.2, insulin-like growth factor 1(IGF-1), IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) were detected by Western blot in tissues and cells. X-ray and Micro CT used to detect bone destruction in rats. Immunofluorescence was used to detect protein expression and spatial location in the spinal dorsal horn. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay used to verify the interaction between HIF-1α and Cav3.2. Results: The results showed that the expression of Cav3.2 channel was upregulated and blockade of this channel alleviated mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia in BCP rats. Additionally, inhibition of IGF-1/IGF-1R signaling not only reversed the BCP-induced upregulation of Cav3.2 and HIF-1α, but also decreased nociceptive hypersensitivity in BCP rats. Inhibition of IGF-1 increased Cav3.2 expression levels, which were abolished by pretreatment with HIF-1α siRNA in PC12 cells. Furthermore, nuclear HIF-1α bound to the promoter of Cav3.2 to regulate the Cav3.2 transcription level, and knockdown of HIF-1α suppresses the IGF-1-induced upregulation of Cav3.2 and pain behaviors in rats with BCP. Conclusion: These findings suggest that spinal Cav3.2 T-type calcium channels play a central role during the development of bone cancer pain in rats via regulation of the IGF-1/IGF-1R/HIF-1α pathway.

RESUMEN

With the growing depletion of traditional fossil energy resources and ongoing enhanced awareness of environmental protection, research on electrochemical energy storage techniques like zinc-air batteries is receiving close attention. A significant amount of work on bifunctional catalysts is devoted to improving OER and ORR reaction performance to pave the way for the commercialization of new batteries. Although most traditional energy storage systems perform very well, their durability in practical applications is receiving less attention, with issues such as carbon corrosion, reconstruction during the OER process, and degradation, which can seriously impact long-term use. To be able to design bifunctional materials in a bottom-up approach, a summary of different kinds of carbon materials and transition metal-based materials will be of assistance in selecting a suitable and highly active catalyst from the extensive existing non-precious materials database. Also, the modulation of current carbon materials, aimed at increasing defects and vacancies in carbon and electron distribution in metal-N-C is introduced to attain improved ORR performance of porous materials with fast mass and air transfer. Finally, the reconstruction of catalysts is introduced. The review concludes with comprehensive recommendations for obtaining high-performance and highly-durable catalysts.

RESUMEN

With excellent energy densities and highly safe performance, solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) have been hailed as promising energy storage devices. Solid-state electrolyte is the core component of SSLBs and plays an essential role in the safety and electrochemical performance of the cells. Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) are considered as one of the most promising candidates among all solid-state electrolytes due to their excellent comprehensive performance. In this review, we briefly introduce the components of CPEs, such as the polymer matrix and the species of fillers, as well as the integration of fillers in the polymers. In particular, we focus on the two major obstacles that affect the development of CPEs: the low ionic conductivity of the electrolyte and high interfacial impedance. We provide insight into the factors influencing ionic conductivity, in terms of macroscopic and microscopic aspects, including the aggregated structure of the polymer, ion migration rate and carrier concentration. In addition, we also discuss the electrode-electrolyte interface and summarize methods for improving this interface. It is expected that this review will provide feasible solutions for modifying CPEs through further understanding of the ion conduction mechanism in CPEs and for improving the compatibility of the electrode-electrolyte interface.

RESUMEN

Not all stents are suitable for children. For instance, premounted stents can be used in infants and small children but cannot dilate with age to accommodate adult-sized pulmonary arteries. Conversely, the Pul-Stent adapts to somatic growth. Thus, our hospital implemented the Pul-Stent in pediatric patients with branch pulmonary artery stenosis. This study summarizes our initial experience with Pul-Stents in this patient population, including the efficacy and safety. We implanted 37 Pul-Stents in 35 patients between August 2014 and June 2015. The patients' mean age and weight at stent implantation were 6.7 ± 3.0 years and 20.9 ± 8.7 kg, respectively. Bench testing revealed that axial shortening of the Pul-Stent was minimal with further dilation, and the radial strength did not change. The stents were successfully deployed in all cases, except two with minor malpositioning. Primarily, 8-12 mm mounting balloons were used for the initial implantation, and a long sheath (8-10 F) was used for delivery. After stent implantation, the minimal lumen diameter in the stenosed segment increased by 50% in 97% (34/35) of patients. Furthermore, the pressure gradient across the stenosed segment decreased by 50% in 77% (23/30) of biventricular patients. One stent fracture and one stent restenosis were noted during the follow-up visits (mean follow-up time: 4.6 ± 1.7 years). Eighteen patients (51%) underwent repeat catheterization; ten had successful redilation. No aneurysms or stent fractures were observed. Our initial results indicate that the Pul-Stent is safe and effective in pediatric patients and can be further dilated over time to accommodate somatic growth. Moreover, the Pul-Stent has good compliance and adequate radial strength to treat pulmonary artery stenosis effectively.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of peripheral lymphocyte count in phenotyping and prognosis prediction in dermatomyositis (DM) patients with anti-MDA5 antibodies. METHODS: In total, 1669 patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) were retrospectively enrolled. Clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with anti-MDA5+ DM were analyzed in association with peripheral lymphocyte counts and clusters determined by unsupervised machine learning. RESULTS: The peripheral lymphocyte count was significantly lower in the anti-MDA5+ DM group (N = 421) than in the other IIM serotype groups. The anti-MDA5+ DM patients were divided into three groups; the severe lymphopenia group had skin ulcers and rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD); patients with a normal lymphocyte count had a younger age of onset, more frequent arthritis, and normal serum ferritin levels, whereas mild lymphopenia group showed a moderate increase of serum ferritin and intermediate incidence of RP-ILD. Survival analysis revealed that the 3- and 6-month mortality rates were significantly higher in the severe lymphopenia group (29.0% and 42.1%, respectively) than in the mild lymphopenia group and normal lymphocyte count group (p value <0.001). Consistently, unsupervised machine learning identified three similar groups; the arthritis cluster shows the highest lymphocyte counts and best prognosis; the RP-ILD cluster presents the lowest peripheral lymphocyte, high incidence of RP-ILD, and poor prognosis; the typical DM rash cluster had a moderate peripheral lymphocyte count and an intermediate prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Lymphopenia is a unique manifestation of anti-MDA5+ DM. Peripheral lymphocyte count can define clinical phenotypes and predict prognosis in anti-MDA5+ DM.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) is a safe and effective method to treat trigeminal neuralgia. Despite it is known that intraoperative balloon volume is crucial in the prognosis of PBC patients and correlates with Meckel's cave (MC) size, it is a lack of objective and valid criteria for intraoperative balloon volume of PBC. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the size of MC and the volume of a pear-shaped balloon in improving the prognosis of patients receiving PBC. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Patients were divided into 3 groups according to their prognosis, and simple linear regression equations were established separately. Group A was defined as having recurrence. Group B was defined as having no recurrence and a Barrow Neurological Institute facial numbness (BNI-N) score of 2 with no recurrence. Correlation analysis was carried out to determine the association of the intraoperative balloon volume with MC size. We attempted to construct simple linear regression models after verifying that both parameters were in compliance with the requirements of this model. RESULTS: Until the end of the 6-months follow-up, 60 patients (93.8%) reported no pain, and 4 patients (6.3%) experienced no significant pain relief. Sixteen (25.0%) patients had severe facial numbness, 48 (75.0%) patients had no facial numbness or had only mild numbness. All 3 groups had a significant correlation between balloon volume and MC size. Group A: Balloon volume (cm3) = -0.371 + 1.883*MC size (R2 = 0.882); Group B: Balloon volume (cm3) = 0.110 + 1.274*MC size (R2 = 0.861); and Group C: Balloon volume (cm3) = 0.011 + 1.835*MC size (R2 = 0.857). LIMITATIONS: The main limitation of our study is its observational retrospective nature, and we were unable to further analyze the intraoperative balloon pressure and volume, as well as validate the accuracy of the model. In additional this was a single-center study with a small sample size and a short follow-up period. These may have contributed to the bias in the final results. A multicenter, prospective study with a large sample size should be performed to further investigate the long-term effects of individualized balloon volumes and the correlation between pressures. CONCLUSIONS: The equation [balloon volume (cm3) = 0.110 cm3 + 1.274*MC size] yields an appropriate value at which the patient has a low recurrence rate and a low degree of facial numbness. Preoperative measurement of MC size can be used to guide the intraoperative balloon volume and to predict the patient's prognosis.

RESUMEN

In this work the nanocomposite of vanadium oxide with conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (VO@PEDOT) was obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis. The detailed study of its structural and electrochemical properties as cathode of aqueous zinc-ion battery was performed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The initial VO@PEDOT composite has layered nanosheets structure with thickness of about 30-80 nm, which are assembled into wavy agglomerated thicker layers of up to 0.3-0.6 µm. The phase composition of the samples was determined by XRD analysis which confirmed lamellar structure of vanadium oxide V10O24∙12H2O with interlayer distance of about 13.6 Å. The VO@PEDOT composite demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance, reaching specific capacities of up to 390 mA∙h∙g-1 at 0.3 A∙g-1. Moreover, the electrodes retain specific capacity of 100 mA∙h∙g-1 at a high current density of 20 A∙g-1. The phase transformations of VO@PEDOT electrodes during the cycling were studied at different degrees of charge/discharge by using ex situ XRD measurements. The results of ex situ XRD allow us to conclude that the reversible zinc ion intercalation occurs in stable zinc pyrovanadate structures formed during discharge.

RESUMEN

Millions of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) based on the activated sludge process have been established worldwide to help to purify wastewater. However, a vast amount of sludge is inevitably generated, and the cost of sludge disposal could reach over half of the total operation cost of a WWTP. Various sludge reduction techniques have been developed, including physicochemical, biological, and combinational methods. Micro-organisms that could reduce sludge by cryptic growth are vital to the biological approach. Currently, only limited functional bacteria have been isolated, and the lack of knowledge on the underlying mechanism hinders the technique development. Therefore, the present study is aimed at isolating sludge-reducing bacteria and optimizing the sludge reduction process through response surface methodology. Nineteen strains were obtained from sludge. The mix-cultures did not show a higher sludge reduction rate than the pure culture, which may be ascribed to the complicated interactions, such as competition and antagonistic effects. In total, 21.2% and 13.9% of total suspended and volatile suspended solids were reduced within 48 h after optimization. The three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectrum and hydrolases test results revealed that the sludge reduction might be promoted by the strain mainly through hydrolysis via proteinase and amylase. The results obtained from the study demonstrate the potential of using micro-organisms for sludge reduction through cryptic growth.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The efficacy of short-term spinal cord stimulation (stSCS) as a treatment for neuropathic pain in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) has already been validated. However, the potential alterations in brain functionality that are induced by such treatment have yet to be completely elucidated. Methods: This study use resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to detect the changes in regional homogeneity (ReHo) and degree centrality (DC) related to stimulator-induced pain relief in patients with PHN. A total of 10 patients with PHN underwent an MRI protocol at baseline and after stSCS. Alterations in ReHo and DC were then compared between baseline and after stSCS. We investigated the relationship between clinical parameters and functional changes in the brain. Results: Clinical parameters on pain, emotion, and sleep quality were correlated with ReHo and DC. ReHo and DC were significantly altered in the middle temporal gyrus, precuneus, superior frontal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, rolandic operculum, middle occipital gyrus, superior parietal gyrus, and the precentral gyrus after stSCS. A significant correlation was detected between ReHo changes in the middle occipital gyrus, precuneus, inferior parietal gyrus, and changes in pain, emotion, and sleep quality. A significant negative correlation was detected between DC changes in the middle temporal gyrus, rolandic operculum, supramarginal gyrus, precuneus, inferior parietal gyrus, and changes in pain, emotion, and sleep quality. Conclusion: This study found that stSCS is able to induce ReHo and DC changes in patients with PHN, thus suggesting that stSCS can change brain function to alleviate pain, sleep, and emotional disorder.

RESUMEN

Alkali metal-O2 batteries exhibit ultra-high theoretical energy density which is even on par with fossil energy and are expected to become the next generation energy storage devices. However, to maintain the advantages of high energy density of alkali metal-O2 batteries, the reversibility of alkali metal anodes with high capacity is of vital importance. But the alkali metal anode with high chemical activity often faces a variety of challenges, including various side reactions, dendrite formation and volume expansion. In this highlight, we focus on the challenges faced by alkali metal anodes in alkali metal-O2 batteries and introduce the latest strategies to effectively stabilize the metal anode. Future perspectives are pointed out, which are valuable for the further development of nonaqueous alkaline metal-O2 batteries.

RESUMEN

Background: A high prevalence of infantile-onset Pompe disease (IOPD) in the Chinese population has been noted, but there are currently no reported clinical trials of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for IOPD in this population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of alglucosidase alfa in Chinese patients with IOPD. Materials and Methods: A multicentre, single-arm, prospective, open-label clinical trial was performed at 4 sites in China. Eligible Chinese subjects with IOPD received an infusion of alglucosidase alfa at a dose of 20 mg/kg every 2 weeks for up to 52 weeks. The primary endpoints of clinical efficacy were the survival rate and changes in the left ventricular mass index (LVMI). The safety assessment was based on the incidence of adverse events (AEs). Results: A total of 10 eligible subjects were enrolled in the study. The mean age at the start of ERT was 5.36 ± 1.56 months. Nine subjects had survived after 52 weeks of treatment. One subject discontinued the study and died after mechanical ventilation was withdrawn. The intent-to-treat analysis demonstrated that the survival rate was 90.0% (95% confidence interval: 55.5-99.7%). The mean LVMI at week 52 was 70.59 ± 39.93 g/m2 compared to that of 298.02 ± 178.43 g/m2 at baseline, with a difference of -227.60 ± 155.99 g/m2. All subjects had left ventricular mass (LVM) Z scores >10 at baseline, and eight subjects (80%) achieved Z scores <5 at week 52. No treatment-related AEs were observed, and no AEs led to the discontinuation of treatment. Conclusions: This clinical trial is the first study of ERT for IOPD in China, indicating that alglucosidase alfa has favourable efficacy and safety for the treatment of Chinese patients with IOPD (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT03687333).

RESUMEN

Background: Few data on paediatric hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are available in developing countries. A multicentre, retrospective, cohort study was conducted to profile the clinical characteristics and survival of children with HCM in China. Methods: We collected longitudinal data on children with HCM aged 0-18 years at three participating institutions between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2019. Patients were identified by searching for the diagnosis using ICD-10 codes from the electronic medical records database. HCM was diagnosed morphologically with echocardiography or cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging. The exclusion criteria were secondary aetiologies of myocardial hypertrophy. The primary outcomes were all-cause death or heart transplantation. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the survival rate of different groups. Findings: A total of 564 children were recruited, with a median age at diagnosis of 1.0 year (interquartile range, IQR: 0.4-8.0 years), followed for a median of 2.6 years (1977 patient-years, IQR:0.5, 5.9 years). The underlying aetiology was sarcomeric (382, 67.7%), inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) (108, 19.2%), and RASopathies (74, 13.1%). A total of 149 patients (26.4%) died and no patients underwent heart transplantation during follow-up. The survival probability was 71.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 66.3%-75.3%) at 5 years. Patients with IEMs or those diagnosed during infancy had the poorest outcomes, with an estimated 5-year survival rate of 16.9% (95% CI, 7.7%-29.1%) and 56.0% (95% CI, 48.8%-62.5%), respectively. Heart failure was the leading cause of death in the cohort (90/149, 60.4%), while sudden cardiac death was the leading cause in patients with sarcomeric HCM (32/66, 48.5%). Interpretation: There is a high proportion of patients with IEM and a low proportion of patients with neuromuscular disease in children with HCM in China. Overall, mortality remains high in China, especially in patients with IEMs and those diagnosed during infancy. RESUMEN

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with extremely-high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg-1 ) are deemed to be the most likely energy storage system to be commercialized. However, the polysulfides shuttling and lithium (Li) metal anode failure in LSBs limit its further commercialization. Herein, a versatile asymmetric separator and a Li-rich lithium-magnesium (Li-Mg) alloy anode are applied in LSBs. The asymmetric separator is consisted of lithiated-sulfonated porous organic polymer (SPOP-Li) and Li6.75 La3 Zr1.75 Nb0.25 O12 (LLZNO) layers toward the cathode and anode, respectively. SPOP-Li serves as a polysulfides barrier and Li-ion conductor, while the LLZNO functions as an "ion redistributor". Combining with a stable Li-Mg alloy anode, the symmetric cell achieves 5300 h of Li stripping/plating and the modified LSBs exhibit a long lifespan with an ultralow fading rate of 0.03% per cycle for over 1000 cycles at 5 C. Impressively, even under a high-sulfur-loading (6.1 mg cm-2 ), an area capacity of 4.34 mAh cm-2 after 100 cycles can still be maintained, demonstrating high potential for practical application.
